Finding A Good Dentist: How Hard Can It Be?

Everyone knows you need to have a good dentist, but finding one is easier said than done. Whether you’ve just moved or you’re simply looking to upgrade, matching your family with the right dentist can be a difficult task. While some people have the good fortune of finishing their search quickly, others spend weeks, months, or years of trial and error trying to sift through dentists. On the bright side, there are a few methods you can use to help make your search go fast.

Talk To People

Nothing is more reputable than word of mouth because you’re talking to people about their own experience. Whether it’s your family, friends, co-workers, or even the first person you see on the street, getting another’s opinion is one of the best factors when deciding what dentist to go to. Unfortunately, if you’ve just moved, you may not have a huge circle of people to ask about what dental office they prefer. If you are able to get a reliable personal recommendation, though, it can make your search significantly easier. Most importantly, remember that one person may have a different opinion than someone else, so ask as many people as you can and weigh what the important factors are to you.

Look At Online Reviews

If you can’t directly ask someone you know, reading online reviews is the next best thing. Google, Angie’s List, Yext, and dozens of other sites allow people to rate their experiences with dentists in certain geographical areas. This can go a long way towards narrowing down your search, and will let you focus on a select few to begin researching.

While this isn’t as good as getting information from a person you know and trust, it is much better than blindly picking an office, and can save you the misfortune of making the wrong choice. Keep in mind that people who go to the trouble to write online reviews are generally either really happy or really angry about their experience, so know you’re probable getting extreme cases and take these reviews with a grain of salt.

Know what’s Important to You

Once a dentist catches your attention, be sure to take advantage of everything you can learn about them. Most dental offices will have websites showcasing their services, education, philosophies, etc. When you’re close to deciding whether to give a dentist a shot, make a list of things that are most important to you and start asking questions. Do you need to have white fillings or a certain philosophy about root canals? Is it important that a pediatric dentist takes care of your kids? If you currently need (or suspect you may in the future) any special treatment, carefully research every dentist find out about their expertise.
